orbis™ + a tiny flash = MORE great light
A while back someone asked me if you can get the great shadowless orbis™ ring flash look with the tiny Canon 270EX. I wasn’t immediately sure, so headed down to my friendly local camera store to find out. Turns out it fits ! And here are the photos to prove it….
As you can see, you need to hold it differently to a normal SLR flash, but it’s no problem at all. But I really wanted to see if it could shoot properly with the orbis™ too, as small flashes like this and the Nikon SB400 aren’t very powerful. So I grabbed my favourite camera bag, a ThinkTank Shapeshifter, and set up a shot from a few meters away with a focal length of 50mm. Settings are ISO400, 1/200 at f5.6. I wasn’t hopeful, but it turns out it works a treat ! I didn’t have time to try it with a Nikon SB400 too, but I’m sure it’ll work just as well as they’ve got a very similar design.
So there you go… off camera flash on the left (with the Canon 270EX) and the orbis™ with the teeny Canon 270EX on the right for great shadowless ring flash lighting. Let me know on the flickr group if you’ve tried the orbis™ with a Nikon SB400. JM
