photographic pranks at PMA digital life expo
July 7, 2010 by admin
Melbourne Australia’s PMA Digital Life Expo this year was an absolute blast. If you’ve never been to Australia, it’s definitely worth the trip, particularly if you can make it around PMA time. We spent the weekend demoing the orbis™ ringflash to hundreds and hundreds of keen photographers. At one point a fight nearly broke out the crowd got so huge… It was a blast and merits a blog post of its very own at a later date. But first, we ran a hilarious competition…
A big shout goes out to Christoph Ziegenhardt for winning AU$300 worth of Kayell Australia camera gear in the orbis™ Stealth Sticker prize draw! What the heck is a “Stealth Sticker” competition I hear you ask ?
Visitors to our orbis™ stand at the PMA Digital Life Expo took an orbisflash.com sticker, stuck it in a cunning, humorous or artful location (or all three) and shot it with any camera they had to hand. We were blown away by the creativity and enthusiasm of the photographers that submitted. Here are a few of our favourite pictures. To see all the entries head over to our facebook page.

in melbourne this weekend? $300 could be yours!

I’m off to PMA in Melbourne in a couple of days time for a non-stop series of orbis™ demos working with the stunning Tracey Lee Beswick from Giant Models on the Kayell Australia stand. To make it even more fun, my crew and I have come up with a fun competition we’ve dubbed the “Stealth Sticker” contest. It’s as easy as 1-2-3 and AU$300 of Kayell Australia vouchers could be yours…. See you in Melbourne !
Prizes will definitely NOT be awarded for posting orbis™ stickers on the outside of tall buildings, or right next to the Canon, Nikon or any other big camera company logos around the show. Or wait… perhaps they will…….
Hop on over to the orbis™ ring flash Facebook Page for details and to watch the competition unfold.
The orbis™ arm Virtual Launch Party
February 5, 2010 by admin
At the end of last year we invited everyone with an orbis™ to a Virtual Launch Party for the orbis™ arm, now available worldwide.
Throwing our own global launch party was going to require a Trump-sized budget. So we threw out the idea to everyone through flickr and elsewhere to shoot any party with an orbis™, post the results to flickr and the results would become the Virtual Launch Party, full of fast’n’ easy shadowless light.
The results are finally in! My excuse for the delay was a new addition to my family that addled my brain and shocked my eardrums, and a whole heap of work to do on my next Strobist-inspired invention.
We couldn’t decide on one winner to rule them all, so came down to two. The first stood out for its colour, charisma and ‘leap off the page’ quality. The second winner just puts you right in the middle of what must have been a super-fun party, with a little perfectly balanced ambient light to tick the “technically accomplished” box.
So I guess you want to see the winners ? First up, let’s step into Christopher Goette’s glamorous life with.. Read more
orbis™ competition with the lightsource podcast!
June 4, 2009 by admin
I’m excited to announce the new orbis™ photo competition in conjunction with the Lightsource photography podcast. It runs until July 3rd 09. The prize is an orbis™ and some other orbis™ goodies to be revealed soon….
I’ve been a big BIG fan of the Lightsource Photography Podcast for more than a year now. It was so wierd actually talking to the presenters Bill and Ed live, hearing the same voices that I’ve listened to interviewing some of the Photography Greats like Joe McNally and David Hobby. And actually talking to me ! A real honour, thanks guys.
Good luck in the contest !
interview with orbis™ competition winner

When Eirik Slyngstad from Norway recently won the first orbis™ ring flash competition, we decided we’d interview him about his ethereal and unusual winning photo:
Here’s what he said:
enlight: Tell us a little bit about the setup for the photo.. lighting, photo equipment, post processing, etc.
Eirik: The photo is taken outdoor, in front of a tree with snowy branches. I used my Canon EOS 40D, 35mm f/2.0 lens, Speedlite EX580 II and the Orbis ring flash module. Both photos are shot with the lens through the ring flash module.
enlight: How did the orbis(tm) contribute to this ? Tell us about some of the other photos you’ve used your orbis(tm) for, that you’re proud of.
Eirik: The Orbis makes a much more softer light than the bare flash, and it also makes a much more beauty dish like light, so I prefer using the Orbis instead of a small softbox or such. I love the skin tones and the way the Orbis makes the skin glow. I often use the Orbis when shooting musicians, and I’ve used it for some of the photos on my streetfashion blog -> http://www.thestreethearts.com.
enlight: Who is the model; is she a pro or a friend or a contact ? Was this your own work or was this a paid assignment?
Eirik: I shot these photos mainly to test out the Orbis a few days after I got it. The model is Solveig Enstad whom I discovered some years ago, and after that she has worked as a model in Oslo and Paris.
enlight: Is the background on the left real or in studio ?
Eirik: The background is real. It was shot outdoor, and I instructed the model to pull the branches and then run away from the falling snow, so the falling snow you can see in the background is real. I guess it was kinda cold for her. The other photo is shot indoor in front of a white wall.
enlight: The styling is cool, tell us a little bit about it.. the clothes and the hair, and how you got the wind-blown effect.
Eirik: Sissel Klakegg did the styling, hair and make-up. I told her to use shimmer to highlight parts of the face. This looks very good when using a beauty dish or the Orbis. I guess she was in a movement in both of the photos, I rarely use fans for wind-effects in studio or elsewhere.
enlight: What’s on your wishlist, that your prize will either afford you, or contribute towards ?
Eirik: I don’t have my own light meter to use in studio, I always tend to borrow one, but I guess I have the chance at getting my own now.
enlight: Tell us about who and what inspires you.
Eirik: I’m not sure, actually. I find inspiration all around me. I admire the works of stylist Nicola Formichetti.
enlight: Finally, is there any advice you’d give to photographers hoping to pick up some tips from you?
Eirik: Well, I would recommend aspiring fashion photographers to get a job as a photographers assistant.
Thanks Eirik !

The winner of the first orbis™ competition has just been announced. Young Norwegian photographer Eirik Slyngstad won, with an ethereal fashion-oriented image taken using his orbis™ ring flash. Check out a full interview with Eirik and see his winning image in our May 4th ‘09 blog post here. Here’s a little strip of some of the finalists:

The orbis™ comp was so hard to judge we couldn’t pick a winner at all when we first started judging. We agonised over our decision for a week and even took to carrying around prints of our favourite photos to stick on the walls of our office and homes. That’s how hard it was! The runners-up are all awesome photos. We’ve posted them to the gallery page, so go take a look!
