About Us

The orbis^® was invented by photographer James Madelin in his garage. He persevered for months building one version after another until he had a modular ring flash prototype that worked. Working as a portrait and newspaper photographer, James had neither the big budgets, the patience or the big muscles required to carry big studio lighting gear around with him but wanted great light from his small flashes.

Using his DIY modular ring flash, the photos were amazing. He knew that he wanted to bottle that  “WOW” moment to pass onto other photographers. But using gear made of duct tape and tin foil is not a great look for any photographer, so one fateful day, James decided to buy a modular ring flash online. Discovering that he couldn’t, he set to work bringing his idea to market.

He founded a company called enlight photo, that he now heads up. A couple of years of intense work with optical engineers and product designers to move the design well beyond anything you could DIY in your garage led to the orbis^®.

A few months after the launch of the orbis^®, in response to overwhelming demand from the photography community, James and his team at enlight photo released the orbis® arm, a mounting accessory for the orbis^®.

These days, with barely any time for pro photography, James and his team work full-time on bringing the orbis^® system to the world and developing new exciting photography accessories.

James is half English and half Swiss, lives in New Zealand and has way too many air miles,  travelling internationally almost non-stop to give lighting workshops, present at tradeshows and to visit orbis^® dealers and distributors around the globe.

Cecilia works at enlight photo in Marketing and Sales, Catherine in Logistics and Sarah works in Customer Services. Behind the core team, an extended team of patent lawyers, optical engineers, CAD designers, graphic designers and more all work in the wings helping make James’ ideas, and those of photographers like you, a reality.
